As a medical student-once I started working with patients and physician teachers, the burning question to me was-aren’t we supposed to be curing people NOT just treating symptoms?  Why I asked did I seem to be just writing prescriptions to treat the SYMPTOMS of high blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease and most other diseases or cutting out  with surgery the symptom of disease and dysfunction  and NOT asking and focusing on WHY you have disease and trying to CURE it-especially before you need surgery.

It was also obvious to me then that there is a step BEFORE screening, such as for cancers-mammography, colonoscopies, prostate tests and exams, skin cancer checks- and most diseases-and that step is true PREVENTION (http://tinyurl.com/yem8ttj).   I tell my patients now that unless you have genetic issues we are just not afflicted by God or whatever you believe in with disease-there is usually a WHY you have it answer or solid clues.  And with clinical experience I saw that even with most genetic challenges you can mitigate and moderate them.

Certainly most diseases that we are all fearful of, that we have seen friends and family suffer so from, that we are WRONG to think are a NORMAL part of aging, CAN BE PREVENTED to a  very significant extent!!  No there are no guarantees and bad things do happen to good people but there are “insurance policies” against most every disease-including acne and aging that are very doable and work for most everyone   You just have to know how-which is what I am going to tell you from my unique medical background and perspective and being I am told one of the very few WHOLISTIC dermatologists.  You have to do your part and not pretend it cannot or will not happen to you.  We all know that nothing is as easy as we would like it to be but trust me-you WANT  to avoid “lying on the stretcher” as MUCH as you want to slow down the ticking of the clock, not have acne, not struggle with your weight, lose your hair, your brain, your energy, your ability to enjoy life.  Ask an ER nurse or Anesthesiologist.  I started as an Anesthesiologist before Dermatology and daily saw that we NEEDED and WANTED to dedicate ourselves to prevention.  Even as I worked in plastic surgery, I clearly saw that we were doing nothing to prevent the symptoms patients were paying so much to try to reverse- so those same patients returned QUICKLY with the same symptoms-aging, brown spots, rosacea, gravity winning everywhere, etc and they also did not know there were alternatives to surgery and downtime and treatment methods that did not make them look “constructed”.

You can have the same info that my patients in Beverly Hills have.    I am giving you my roadmap, the knowledge, the tools that work best and are best use of your money, then you can make decisions that are best for YOU from a position of an overview of knowledge rather than marketing-science vs commerce.   The side effect of what I will teach you is HEALTH-internal and external.  The most you can look is 10-20 years younger than your age and the earlier you start doing the right thing, the younger and more healthy you will remain.

Life is a self-discipline issue and none of us like self-discipline nor have enough of it but when you look and feel MUCH younger than those you compare yourself to, it is powerful motivation. AND you CAN eat, drink and make merry and NOT suffer the consequences IF you know HOW to do it CORRECTLY.  Life is about the balance and is meant to be lived and I am NOT into deprivation, nor doing an unreasonable amount to achieve the goal.

So in 2010 I am going to give you-doable solutions at every budget, no matter where you are in the world.  I have patients all over the world so I am knowledgeable about your challenges and what is available to you.

Why you ask am I doing this, why should you listen to me and what does dermatology have to do with health, hormones, weight, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, hypothyroid, hair loss and a myriad of other internal diseases?

Avoid the following foods as much as possible (which feed the fungus).  I suggest one month of “boot camp” avoiding these foods as much as possible then overall avoid with an “everything in moderation” approach.  Our job is to teach you the perfect way and then moderation from there:

Cow’s Milk/cheese/yogurt – use alternatives (i.e. goat’s milk (cheese, butter (Whole Foods), yogurt) sheep’s milk cheese, unsweetened almond milk, or light coconut milk (in cans from Trader Joe’s)-it’s the lactose (sugar) in cow’s milk that is bad and virtually everyone is somewhat allergic and you get MUCH more calcium from green foods and vegetables and the alternatives-including children.

Corn-digests right to sugar in the body-also very fattening.  Pasta made from semolina is corn.  Buckwheat pasta is the best – Koreans eat this or from quinoa.  Rice pasta goes to sugar on digestion also.  With pasta it is best to have a small amount of the pasta and most of the dish be the tomato/vegetable/protein.

White & Red potatoes – can eat purple Peruvian potatoes and sweet potatoes with sweet potatoes being first choice.

White rice-goes immediately to sugar in the body including rice milk and riceFlour ice cream.  Best is wild rice (add onions, garlic, ginger-which kill yeast- or turmeric/curry, etc., whatever you like to flavor.  Brown rice is second choice.

Flour (including whole wheat) – all goes to sugar- alternatives are Ezekiel sprouted bread, quinoa, buckwheat.

Sweets – for your sweet tooth, the alternative is only dark, dark chocolate (the higher the % of cocoa the better – at least 70%).  Cacao kills fungus so a really good thing to do is buy raw unsweetened cacao and put a teaspoon or more over your DARK and not so sweet fruit and you can put when you are brewing your coffee or however you discover works for you!

Healthy to Eat/Drink:

To replace carbs-RAW almonds, walnuts, pecans, hemp seeds, goji berries (no peanuts)purple fruits

Fruits and Vegetables:  the darker the better. Fruits that are best-blue/red/black berries, dark

cherries, pomegranate, cranberries, kiwi, blood oranges, dragon fruit (Trader Joe’s has sun-dried) are good options.

Alcohol that is best-Scotch, vodka, tequila (but with NO sugar/sweet mixers-even diet.  Soda, water, you can make margaritas with fresh lemon/lime/blood orange, Red wine (excluding Merlot).

“We have seen the enemy and it is us.” Researchers have confirmed over and over that most of the deadly diseases we face today are lifestyle related. All of the top disease killers, vascular disease, cancer and diabetes are largely preventable with changes in eating and activity patterns. More than anything else, food seems to have a major impact on which diseases we get. Not surprisingly, as we now know that these diseases are underwritten by inflammation and oxidation, two disease-causing processes controlled by which foods we eat. Unfortunately, eating has become quite complicated as more and more experts weigh in on the appropriate diet. The medical dogma has been for quite some time to eat a high carbohydrate, low fat, moderate protein diet. The result of that have been more diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Newer experts are recommending high protein and low or no carbohydrates. Then there are any number of fad diets that come and go. Confused consumers are eating cake until the smoke clears.

The simplicity of an eating plan that promotes weight loss became apparent to me after speaking with a colleague of mine who had studied in China. One of the first things he noticed when he got there was that there were no fat people. Obviously this was not a genetic manifestation as back in the US there were many fat Chinese Americans. Secondly, he noticed that after about 3 weeks, he had inadvertently lost 10 lbs. How did that happen? Years later, after gaining those ten pounds back and more, he mused about how he had so easily lost weight without trying and without starving himself. They didn’t have the refined sugar and processed foods that we have in the USA. They drink water and unsweetened tea instead of juice and soft drinks. They have fresh fruit for dessert instead of cake and pie. Fresh produce is brought to the kitchen each day, and they eat lots of fish.

Principles of the BALI Eating Plan.

BALI stands for Basic, Antioxidant! Anti-fungal, Low insulin. These are the characteristics of an eating plan that will optimize your health. This is a different objective than weight loss. Some diets offer weight loss, but put your health at risk. Here is why this eating plan will work for you.

Basic – Our bodies operate in a biochemically-balanced system. If anything gets out of balance, the body has to work to get back in balance. For example, the body likes to operate at a temperature of 98.6 degrees. Outside that range we sweat to cool off or shiver to keep warm. Wide variations in either direction can lead to death. pH or acid/base balance is another narrow window that the body has to maintain for health. Acid/base balance is complicated science, but suffice it to say that moving toward acidity is a sign of deterioration toward disease and death. As your blood pH decreases, it supports cancer, causes yeast and bacterial over growth and stimulates pain. Your body struggles to rebalance by pulling minerals like calcium and magnesium out of your bones (osteoporosis is spurred by blood that is too acidic). Use the guidelines from the books The pH Miracle by Robert Taylor Ph.D., The No Grain Diet by Joseph Mercola M.D., The Maker’s Diet By Jordan RubinN.D., The Diet Cure by Julia Ross, or Eat Right to live Longer by Cass Ingram D.O. to start rebalancing your pH with your foods. White flour and other grains, sugar, salt, dairy products, and animal protein promote acid in your blood. Balance your plate by filling it with 1/3 high quality protein (fish, skinless chicken, lean/hormone free, grass fed beef, raw nuts, natural soy protein, eggs, dark beans). The other 2/3 should consist of alkalinizing foods. (The higher the pH value, the more positive the food is for you.) Drink water with peppermint and fresh lemon juice squeezed into it. Use dark alkalinizing fruit for dessert. Follow this way of eating 4/7 days for one month as you transition your home to include only foods that support the health of you and your family. Advance to 5/7 days the next month, then finally 6/7 days. Keep one day free to splurge.

Antioxidant/Anti-fungal – Destruction of body tissue happens from inflammation/oxidation (Oximation). This is the same process that causes nails to rust. Oxidation is a normal process that happens as we burn glucose for energy. However when you eat too much sugar, have too much yeast, or have too much heavy metal in your blood, oxidation is accelerated. This leads to heart disease, Alzheimer’s, cataracts, wrinkled skin, impotence, arthritis, cancer and many other diseases. Inflammation is the process generated by your immune systems. These cellular soldiers will launch weapons of mass destruction if they detect overgrowth of yeast or other germs. Chronic inflammation will also destroy normal tissue and cause disease. Prevent Oximation by eating dark greens, fresh garlic, dark berries such as cranberry, pomegranate and blood oranges, extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, raw nuts, deep red and yellow vegetables, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, cauliflower, brussel sprouts), avocado, fish, carrots, raw sweet potatoes, dark citrus fruits, purple grapes, tomatoes, dark beans and red onions.

Low insulin – Over production of insulin starts a chain reaction that leads to weight gain and death. Insulin promotes growth of fat cells. Fat cells then produce an estrogen called estrone. Estrone promotes further fat cell multiplication. Estrone also inhibits thyroid function, which causes you to have to produce more insulin to do the same job. Estrone further complicates things by inhibiting thyroid function and slowing metabolism. This allows yeast overgrowth, which lowers immune system function. As insulin becomes less effective at controlling blood sugar, yeast cells feed on rising blood sugar and make your brain cells think you are starving. This creates an addictive attraction to food. Foods that stimulate insulin production are foods that readily turn to sugar. Some people have a genetic predisposition to produce more insulin than others. Artificial sweeteners that are many times sweeter than sugar, like aspartame and sucralose (Splenda), make your body react by producing insulin also because they fool your pancreas with their super sweet taste. Use xylitol as a sweetener. Also add spices like cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom and nutmeg to give foods flavor. Major foods to avoid are: grains, sugar (white sugar, brown sugar, organic/grass fed/Kosher/blessed by the Pope sugar, fructose, maltose, lactose, sucrose, sodas, fruit juices, honey, syrup, jellies, apple juice, grape juice), white potatoes, corn and products made from corn, rice and rice products, crackers, cereals, pasteurized cow’s milk (lactose), fruit juices and foods that contain “hydrogenated” fat.

Follow this simple way of eating 6/7 days each week, use the supplements I recommend, get your hormones balanced, and exercise 45 minutes, 3 to 4 days a week and I guarantee your health will improve!

BALI DIET BASICS

1. Eliminate grains and sugar, which promote yeast overgrowth. Includes: bread, crackers, cereals, pasta, corn, rice. Steel cut oats and buckwheat flour products can be used in transition. Substitute dark beans and lentils for your carbohydrates. Coconut flour is available. To make “sandwiches”, wrap food in cabbage leaves or seaweed and add hummus or other bean pate. Cow’s milk has a sugar called “galactose” that yeast love very much. No fruit juices, sodas, or other sweetened beverages.

2. Protein sources-dark beans, fish, natural soy protein, range fed chicken, wild game meats, turkey, grass fed, hormone free beef, raw nuts, buffalo. Easy on the beef. No cured/deli meats.

3. Carbs-Dark beans and lentils. All types of vegetables. Purple cruciferous are powerful yeast killers. Sweet potatoes/yams and other dark root vegetables, especially raw.

4. Fat-Coconut milk, raw nuts, extra-virgin olive oil, avocado, coconut oil, nut butters, real butter/cream, ghee

5. Sweeteners – xylitol, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, glycerin, unrefined sorghum molasses.

6. Drinks-water, Crystal Geyser or other carbonated waters, low sodium tomato juice, green/black/white tea/herbal teas, coffee, drinks using 100% raw chocolate, nut milks, club soda, coconut milk smoothies, unsweetened coconut water, Kombucha, freshly juiced vegetables-especially purple.

7. Fruit-any dark fruit/berries. The less sweet the better: Pomegranate, cranberries, blood oranges, red grapefruit-wash-don’t peel.

8. Spice up your meals with antifungals-garlic, green/red onions, leeks, shallots, turmeric, peppermint, oregano, thyme, coriander, bay leaf, cloves, and cinnamon.

Purple CabbageGreen foods are important. Very important. But/And what people don’t realize is that just as important are your purple foods! The best purple foods are the foods that are purple inside and out. Purple foods are extremely anti-fungal, and per my messaging, fungus in our diet and in our system directly leads to inflammation and disease. I want to share a great diet to decrease fungus in our bodies, to keep anti-oxidized and as healthy as possible! Antibiotics treat bacteria, but fungal overgrowth is the cause of most problems, and antibiotics – at best – do nothing for fungus, and can make the fungal overgrowth worse. Purple foods such as raw cranberries and purple cabbage are more anti-fungal than pharmaceutical anti-fungals. They are also directly related to better health, are extremely anti-aging and rejuvenating.

First: Let’s look at Fungus in our system.
Fungal overgrowth is the primary cause of most sinus and prostate infections and skin rashes and acne. A fungal overgrowth in the body can mimic many diseases, such as diabetes, sinusitis, eczema, digestive disorders, and even cancer. And many times, we unknowingly take antibiotics or other prescription medications that make our symptoms worse. Fungal overgrowth is caused by all the hidden sugars and grains that we eat – such as wheat, corn, white potatoes, white rice, cow’s milk artificial sweeteners, and sugars primarily.

Follow the following diet 5xs a week for the first month, then you may decrease to 3-4xs a week.

• eat a heaping fistful of raw cranberries (fresh or frozen – but if they are frozen thaw them out first). You can purchase these from Whole Foods or any grocery store.

• eat a heaping fistful or more (about 1/8 – 1/4) head of purple cabbage

• drink 1 ounce of pure undiluted Acai juice (make sure there is NO sugar added) *if you can’t find pure undiluted Acai juice, then sometimes you can find Acai juice diluted with blueberries (make sure, again NO sugar added. Do NOT buy Acai juice with grape or any other juice (due to the high sugar content). If the Acai juice that you find is diluted with blueberries – you need 2 ounces per day vs. 1 ounce.

If you prefer to combine the juice with all the other ingredients together, that’s completely fine. However, make sure you eat the PULP of the juice, as this is where the anti-fungal ingredients are concentrated.

Remember: Follow the following diet 5xs a week for the first month, then you may decrease to 3-4xs a week.

Where does ACNE come from? Here are VERY common causes:

When you have acne, it is first because genetically you are more sensitive to hormones normally produced in every person’s body. Stress (such as starting back to school or a test), all sugars and sweeteners (Blackstrap Molasses and Agave are best choices because “tart” is the new sweet) and anything made from wheat, corn, white potatoes, cow’s milk (all of which the body turns into sugar), animal and cooked oils used in fast foods – increase the amount of hormones produced by your body, which in turn, increases oil production in the skin and contributes a LOT to pimple production. These foods also increase fungus growth inside the body – in your blood and skin- because sugar production feeds fungus. And fungus is everywhere. Fungus inflames the body, depresses your immune system and increases hormone and oil production…so MORE and WORSE acne.

How can I DECREASE Fungus? What foods are best to eat for clearer skin?

DARK (the more purple the better – inside and out) fruits, such as RAW cranberries, blueberries, pomegranates, blackberries, kiwi (not sweetened and not with sulfites), and vegetables are VERY antifungal. Those are the best foods to include in your daily diet and for snacks. Be careful with fruit juices – there’s a lot of added sugars in them. (Except Acai and Pomegranate because it is the pulp of the fruit which kills fungus).

Best foods to also eat as well are – the closer to nature the better, such as black and red beans, hormone and antibiotic free (organic) eggs and turkey, raw almonds, walnuts and pecans (these help a lot to replace the carbs), wild meat such as buffalo and venison and wild (not farm raised) fish such as salmon, and goat products. Garlic, onions and ginger kill fungus. Eating these things keep your immune system strong and help CURE acne a LOT. In addition, be sure to drink water (and unsweetened green tea).

Also, Fungus hates oxygen – so exercising is anti-fungal and anti-acne.

OH! And if you are not having a bowel movement every day, your skin is much more prone to acne. All the above foods help a LOT to be regular and keep you in a better mood – because unbalanced hormones directly contribute to bad moods!
